A latest study by Juniper Research has predicted that global revenues from mobile augmented reality (AR) applications and services are expected to reach $1.5 billion by 2015. The report title- ‘Mobile Augmented Reality: Opportunities, Forecasts & Strategic Analysis 2011-2015′- says that a growing number of top retailers, brands, and mobile vendors are showing great interest in investing on augmented reality applications.
According to the study, the installed base of Augmented Reality capable smartphones has grown from 8 million in 2009 to over 100 million in 2010. AR applications which in the beginning were of interest of smaller application development companies and researchers at technological institutes are now increasingly facilitated by large mobile app developers.
Other key developments highlighted in the report are- release of AR-software development kit for Android by Qualcomm, Samsung’s pronouncement to preload AR browsers onto their handsets in select markets and advertising campaigns on mobile featuring AR elements from leading brands such as Carlsberg and Coca Cola.
According to report author, “One of the key benefits from this heightened activity is the fact that it generates press interest and public awareness: even if consumers don’t necessarily understand how it works, they can see real life examples of AR in action. Likewise, it serves to generate wider interest amongst brands and developers who can see potential applications for AR technology; it educates the market” says Dr Windsor Holden, author of the report.
However, the report also cautioned that both mobile application developers and customers are still not convinced about the exact benefits of AR in customer relationship as efforts in the past have either failed or delivered very little of benefits.

A ‘Tresspasser’ in Apple’s Garden: An Ipad That Runs Google’s Chromium OS
Oct 1, 2010 iPad Development
A ‘little’ surprise for Apple fanatics. Google’s new Chromium operating system has finally ‘tresspassed’ its way over the fence into Apple’s garden.
Hexxeh, an YouTube user, posted a video of the iPad apparently running Chromium OS, the open-source version of Chrome OS. The 26 secs demo depicts the “Chromepad” running the Chrome browser and responding to touch commands, but doesn’t run long enough to show much else. Hexxeh’s video proves this epic hack is real.
Hexxeh didn’t disclose very much on his blog about how he performed the hack, but it’s still pretty cool. You can even see a (sluggish) mouse cursor as he moves his finger around the screen!

Brides, Priest and An iPad!
Aug 19, 2010 News, iPad Development
Really, it is astonished to see how Apple’s iPad play such a big role in a person’s life that you can almost say they are married to his iPad…and more astonishment, he can get married by his iPad!
Aaron and Katie, the groom and the bride…their wedding got fecilitated by an iPad! as it made its rounds to the priest and then the bride and groom. Not only did bride Katie read her vows to husband Aaron from the iPad, she composed them on it as well.
Aaron and Katie’s wedding was held outdoor, a shade was provided to help reading from the iPad easier as iPad and sunlight does not make a good ‘couple’ for readability. I think this wedding certainly qualify for off-beat nuptials. What do say folks?

iPad News Aggregator Pulse Goes Social With Posterous
Aug 3, 2010 Android Development, Mobile Development, iPad Development
When the mobile app developer Alphonso Labs launched Pulse, the beautiful feed reader app, it was pretty well received by the audience. However, Pulse is not so socially personalized and synchronized as Flipboard. An update tonight hopes to change Pulse and make it more social and personalized.
Pulse has teamed up with Posterous to create a simpler ‘Pulse’ to make users create their own “Pulses” easily and in a more personalized way. Easily and personalized basically means that an user can add any article to their own pulse with a single tap. Posterous comes in because each of these Pulse items are transfered to a free blog which is automatically created for you. This blog aggregates the news and articles you have picked, thus enabling you to share your news with friends who does not have Pulse. But, friends of yours using Pulse will have an easier way to subscribe to your “Pulses”, simply by searching your name or username.
Last week, Pulse was launched on Android platform. The app works on iPhone and iPod Touch, though this aggregator version of the app is only on iPad for the time being.

Is Your Website iPad Ready ?
Apr 5, 2010 iPad Development
Since Apple unveiled iPad earlier this year there has been a continuous buzz about the iPad not supporting Flash.
Yeah, it’s true that Apple’s new iPad doesn’t support Flash yet it has everything you need. It comes with Apple’s Safari which is built on WebKit which gives developers the option to develop great web apps on HTML5, CSS3 & JavaScript. You don’t even need to take the pain to download separate plug-in as we do it for flash to consume the Flash content. So, no plugin means no separate process for CPU, which saves more CPU cycles and still we can experience the fantastic web apps on our iPad.
Well, here are some already iPad Ready Web Sites which you can access right from day one, when you get your iPad this weekend.

iPad Release Delayed Till April
Mar 8, 2010 News, iPad Development
For all those mobile developers that are craving the iPad since Jobs showed it in public, there’s a small bad news – you need to wait till April 3rd before you can get your hands on to the iPad. On Friday Apple announced that iPads would be available in store from April 3rd , which is a few days delay compared to Apple’s earlier announcement of launching the iPad by end of March.
The iPad will initially be available in two versions: WiFi, and WiFi with 3G.According to information posted on the company’s website both can be pre-ordered (from Apple’s online store as well as from Apple’s retailers) from March 13. The WiFi version will be available for pickup on April 3, with the 3G version expected a few weeks later.
There is no change from earlier announced pricing. The iPad WiFi would retail in the U.S. for a $499 (16GB), $599 (32GB) and $699 (64GB). The WiFi 3G models would retail for $629 (16GB), $729 (32GB) and $829 (64GB).
To put the costs into some perspective, tech intelligence firms have estimated that the total bill of materials (BOM) for the 32GB 3G iPad would come to about $290 (typically these numbers are arrived at after disassembling the product, which is not possible in this case as the product is not publicly available).
