Microsoft Unveils New Mobile Operating System Windows Phone 7
Oct 12, 2010 News, Windows Mobile
A new mobile phone operating system was unveiled by Microsoft on Monday at New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, took the wraps off nine mobile phones powered by Windows Phone 7 (WP7) at the event.
Ballmer said more than 60 mobile operators around the world will offer the devices, made by South Korea’s Samsung and LG Electronics, Taiwan’s HTC and Dell, the US computer giant, in more than 30 countries.
“We have built a different kind of a phone,” Ballmer said. “We set out to build a phone that was thoroughly modern.”
Ballmer said Microsoft is emphasizing personalization and customization with WP7, the first significant update to its mobile operating system in 18 months.
“We focused on the things that real people really want to use,” he said. “We really put our energy into bringing together the things that you love.”
Smartphones powered by WP7 will run email from various services — not just Microsoft’s Hotmail — integrate calendars, contacts and social networks and allow for documents to be viewed, edited and shared using Microsoft Office.
WP7, which represents a shift for Microsoft from the enterprise market to the consumer, will also allow users to tap into Microsoft’s Zune music player platform and to access mobile versions of Xbox 360 games.
US telecom carrier AT&T showed off three devices which will sell for around 200 dollars in the United States, about the same price as Apple’s iPhone.
Another US carrier, T-Mobile, will offer two WP7-powered devices in November.

Windows Phone 7 App Building Tools Coming on Sept. 16
Aug 24, 2010 Windows Mobile
Microsoft said on Monday that on September 16, app building tools for Windows phone 7 are coming. The app building tools were available in beta test form for several months and the final developer tools will be available next month. Microsoft also released a 12-hour training course for developers on this.
Microsoft is also launching its new mobile operating system this Autumn to compete with the success of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android operating systems.
The success of Windows Phone 7 will depend on the apps, which is what made iPhone and Android’s success. The type and quality of apps for Windows Phone 7 will depend on the mobile application developers which is why Microsoft is making a big deal about the tools.
Here is the Microsoft blog item detailing the new app building tools coming.

Microsoft Apologizes For Its Kin's ad
Apr 19, 2010 Windows Mobile
Microsoft’s newly unveiled Kin is a handset that aims primarily at social networking for teenagers which has led Microsoft in so much trouble.
The Ad depicts a bunch of youngster at a party , towards the end of the video a guy snaps a pic of his chest and sends it to a young girl in the party , who is amused to see the topless pic .
Microsoft has apologized for the Sexting issue which has been reported for the Kin’s Ad by the consumer reports which made this ad a big issue for Microsoft . Sexting which the Wikipedia defines as “the act of sending sexually explicit messages or photographs electronically, primarily between mobile phones.”. Microsoft has now edited the ad after all these problems came in and the new ad doesn’t contain any offending content rest of the video is the same .
A spokesperson said, “Microsoft takes the issue of sexting very seriously and it was never our intent to promote it in any way.”
I think Microsoft has done a wise thing by pulling out the advertisement .

Are You a Mobile Developer Waiting for Windows Phone 7 Series
Mar 5, 2010 Windows Mobile
Microsoft just unveiled its Windows Phone 7 Last month and if you are already excited about what new possibilities would it bring for the mobile application developers, there are enough reasons to be happy.
Charlie Kindel wrote on his blog yesterday about what Windows Phone 7 would mean for application developers. He has mentioned that Windows Phone 7 is going to be completely different from what Microsoft has done in the mobile space before and is also going to be pretty different from the other existing phones.
Windows Phone 7 Series would be highly focused on end user experience and this would also extend to the developer platform. Based on the feedback they collected from mobile developers around the world Microsoft has actually changed its strategy to accommodate what developers have asked of them.
Charlie mentions that there are three basic goals for the Windows 7 Platform..
- Enable end users to be able to personalize their phone experience through a large library of innovative, compelling, games and applications.
- Enable developers to profit.
- Advance the “3 screen plus cloud” vision
And when they talk about Profit for mobile developers they just don’t mean money. Charlie clearly states that they are also considering those other mobile developers who are interested in advancing their knowledge and learning and those few developers who are more interested in the fame and pride that they earn from some of their most successful apps than the money it brings in. So, if you are a mobile developer and contemplating what Windows phone 7 series would have in store for you – the picture looks really bright, there is something for everyone.
